In my search for ancestors, from Nannie B Nimmo who wrote “The Rockholds of Early Maryland” I learned that Robert Rockhold the son came to America from Fitzhead England in the year of 1634. His father also named Robert Rockhold remained in England.

(1) My many greats grandfather Robert, the son, married Sarah Greniffe and they had a son John Rockhold.

(2) John Rockhold married Mary Richardson and their son Charles Rockhold was born in Maryland in 1685

(3) Charles Rockhold married Elizabeth Wright and their son John Rockhold was born in1711 in Maryland.

(4) John Rockhold married Elizabeth Talbot and their son Jacob Rockhold was born August 27 1740 in Maryland.

(5) Jacob Rockhold married Elizabeth unknown and their son Jacob was born March 7, 1770 in Maryland.

(6) Jacob Rockhold married Eleanor Rutledge and they had 10 children. Their first born was William Rockhold born September 20, 1791.

(7) William Rockhold married Ann Collett and they had two children Elisha John Rockhold born November 11,1827 and Mary Matilda born February 24 1829. William died April 19, 1886 in Muskingum county Ohio.

(8) Elisha John Rockhold married Elizabeth Louisa Miller June 13, 1858. They both died in Union County Ohio, they were my grand parents on my father’s side.

My father Levi was 17 years old when his mother Louisa died. Louisa was 40 years old when my father was born the baby of the family . His sister my Aunt Mary Matilda Bowen told me since he was so much younger than his siblings they had all spoiled him.

Standing my mother Mary Etta Longbery Rockhold , Uncle Elmer Longberry sitting Grampa Perry Longberry, Aunt Bertha Longberry Rish, Gramma Louisa Longberry

(9) Levi Gilbert Rockhold married Mary Etta Longberry and they had13 children.
(1) John  (2) Carl (3) Edith (4)Mabel (5) Geneva (6) Burl (7) Bee (8) Edna (9) Hazel (Bobbie) (10) Fannie (11) Earnest (Ernie) (12) Florence (me) (13) Howard (Bugs)

Levi and Mary Etta Rockhold had over 50 grandchildren. So to those of my nieces and nephews who are still living this is how you got to be AMERICANS.

I’m PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN land of the USA!!!!!!!!! It was just 14 years after the Famous MAYFLOWER ship LANDED IN Massachusetts that our many greats grandfather Robert Rockhold landed at Baltimore Harbor.

When my granddaughter Evin was in school her teacher ask whose relative came to this country first and she was the one whose relative did. In fact HER MANY GREATS GRANDFATHER CAME TO AMERICA log before anyone else in her class.

If you do a search of you ancestors you may find a grandparent who came to America way back when…………….

YOU MIGHT GET A DELIGHTFUL SURPRISE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FRF❤️

Hello Flo! I was very pleased to run across your blog while doing some genealogy research. William Rockhold is my great-great grandfather. I really enjoy the stories you have posted here and the Rockhold family photo is great. I already have a lot of information that Howard Rockhold sent to my grandfather Merwyn several years ago, but it is really nice to see photos and read stories about the people themselves, rather than just birth and death dates alone.

I am trying to find a copy of “The Rockholds of Maryland.” Do you happen to know of a library that holds it?

    Best Wishes,
    Jennifer Rockhold

I actually just found a copy of the “Rockholds of Maryland” article online. It’s part of a larger book.

Here is a link if you would like a copy of the PDF file. The info on the Rockholds start on page 371.

Jeniffer, I’m so delighted to hear from you. I knew your Grandfather Merwyn, he was a very likable person. Was his wife’s name Effie? I’m 94 years old now and can’t remember many things I used to know. I’ve been very fortunate to remember writing my stories for Internet. The numbers you gave me to look up didn’t all come through.
It was many years ago when I was living in Venice Florida that when I was at the Venice library I c met a distant cousin because she was looking up her genealogy. Her last name was Rockwell and she had found that her relatives had been Rockholds but when they moved from Maryland to the north they changed their name to Rockwell.
she is who told me about the artical only she called it a book about the Rockholds of Maryland.
        Thank you for you comment.

Thanks for the reply. Effie was actually married to my great-grandfather Roy (Son of William and a nephew to Levi), and Merwyn is their son. I remember that Effie was a very sweet and quiet lady, but unfortunately I never got to meet Roy.

It’s interesting to meet distant cousins who were once Rockholds but adopted another surname, like you were saying with the Rockwell researcher in Florida. I had a similar experience with a “Rockholt” family researcher.

Regarding the link to “The Rockholds of Maryland” in my previous comment: it is an article that was part of a collection of research papers about early Maryland Colonial families. To see the article, all you have to do is click on the link address itself, and it will take you to the online book. If you then scroll down to page 371, that is where it starts to discuss the Rockholds of Maryland. It is very interesting and well-cited.

          All the best,
          Jennifer

Hi Florence, I have become interested in tracing our ancestry. In my research I ran across your blog. I am very pleased with the history you have posted and I thank you. I am the daughter of Lowell and Virginia Rockhold Davis, granddaughter of Carl Rockhold.
My best regards to you, Marcie Patton

Thank you Marcie, my granddaughter Jodi Wedding is in Gables Nursing Home In Marysville Ohio as is your mother Virginia. It is the best nursing home I have ever heard of. As a real estate agent in Venice Florida I went to a nursing home different times for signatures on contracts by sellers of their homes and none of them were like Gables.
I had help looking for ancesters coming to America at the Venice Library. There I met a lady named Rockwell who found her ancesters had been named Rockhold in Maryland and on moving north changed their name to Rockwell at that time. Good luck with your search. I now live in Sarasota Florida in a gated Community. It is very nice here. Today’s weather is very warm.

Thank you, Florence for your reply. Yes, mom is at the Gables. She fell in 2013 due to normal pressure hydrocephalus. We had a shunt placed in her brain to relieve that pressure. Dad took care of her at home till he fell in 2015 broke his neck. He has surgery, his neck is fused in one position. He is not able to move his head at all, thus no driving. He is no longer able to take care of mom who has been in a wheel chair since she fell in 2013. It was a very hard decision to make. Mom also suffers from dementia and short term memory loss. She is very hateful at times. We all are trying to make the best of it. Dad is at home, but relies on us kids to get him to and fro. I help him with house cleaning, have him to our house 3 or 4 time a week to eat and to get him out of the house. It is so nice to hear from you, I pray you are doing well and having a good winter.
    Sincerely,
    Marcie

You are a very understanding and wonderful daughter to each of your parents. They are very fortunate to have you. I’m so sorry to hear about Lowell’s problem. Life is never fair we just all have to adjust to our circumstances. I would love to still be in my own home but I enjoy living here. My daughter Pamela and son-in-law Tracy take very good care of me so I am very fortunate. I can’t do much but I sit up in bed and type my blogs add the pictures which I take with my IPad and store in the iPad album, then send the completed blog to my grandson’s office in Kent Ohio to be put on line. I do my own laundry, bake cakes, cookies and pies, and make it my job to keep the kitchen clean. I am a born workaholic so continue to keep as busy as my broken down 94 year old body can do. My sister Fannie will be 99 this April 30. My brother Howard is 91.
Love to you and your family.
    Aunt Florence.
Ps: if you would give me you address and your Email address I will write letters to you and emails. I write to several people including your aunt Janice. I always write her happy stuff to make her feel good.
    Flo
The Gables is a very nice nursing home and I’m sure your mother is well taken care of.
