He was running ahead of me as fast as his little two year old legs could carry him, from my farm milk house, to the porch of my home. Getting there ahead of me, he picked up a potted flower, quickly turned it upside down, the plant fell out on the ground.

He reached in the soil, pulled out a fish worm, held it up and with sparkling eyes and the happiest smile, that only my little grandson could give, he said, “GOIN’ FISHIN’ TONIGHT”!!!!”

After a big rain, as I was driving past his home, he was sitting by the ditch that ran along the road, with a stick and string tied to the end, fishing in that water filled ditch! He was about 9 or 10, when his mother, my daughter Meredythe, put him on a plane in Columbus, Ohio to fly to Tampa, Florida airport. From there his other grandmother, Josephine Wedding, who lived in St Petersburg, picked him up and kindly brought him to my home on Da Vince Drive in Sorrento East, Nokomis, Florida.

First thing he said was, “Gramma, when can I go fishing in the Gulf?” So on Wednesday I took him to the Intra-coastal waterway on the island of Venice by the Marker 4 Restaurant, where a good sized boat was loading for a half day of fishing in the Gulf of Mexico.

I met his boat when it returned, and a very sad little boy came walking to my car, and said, “Gramma, we didn’t go out far enough to catch any fish. But Gramma, Saturday they go 10 miles out into the Gulf for all day fishing.”

Saturday we head out for that boat early! Now I have a happy little trooper again!

Late afternoon, as I am waiting for him to walk from the boat, I see they have a line strung up on the boat with two small fish and one quite large one, hanging there for everyone to see. Apparently, that was the catch of the day.

As two older men came walking by my car, one of them asked the other one, “Who caught that BIG FISH?” The reply, “Oh, some kid!”

As I keep watching, there comes my grandson carrying that big fish and he has a snapshot they took of him holding that BIG BEAUTIFUL GROUPER!!!!
